VO is a little smoother than 7. They taste about the same mixed, but VO is easier straight or with water. VO is the mid-grade of the Seagrams whiskey line, with Crown Royal being the top. VO is also made in Canada whereas 7 is distilled in the US.

Both are blended whiskies from that were once produced by the Seagram's company, and are now owned by liquor conglomerate Diageo. Seagram's was originally based in Ontario, but later expanded with a distillery in Indiana. Seagram's 7 Crown is considered the most basic of their brands, and is made in Indiana. "VO" stands for "Very Own." (It supposedly was first blended for John Seagram's son's wedding.) VO is more expensive and is considered a higher level whisky. VO is actually made in Canada, though now in Manitoba. The same distillery also makes Crown Royal, which was Seagram's high end whisky.
