Windows XP Professional differs from the Home Edition mainly in its support for a few business-class networking technologies, namely joining a Windows Server domain and containing a version of IIS. It also supports two physical processors, unlike the Home Edition, which permits only one physical die (but it can have any number of cores).

Windows 7 Home Premium makes it easy to create a home network and share all of your favorite photos, videos, and music. You can even watch, pause, rewind, and record TV. Get the best entertainment experience with Windows 7 Home Premium.

If you use your PC for work, you'll want Windows 7 Professional. It can help you be more productive and protect the critical information you need to work with. Many routine tasks just take a couple of clicks, so you can spend less time setting up projectors, printers, and networks. Enhanced backup options can help you protect your hard work with automatic backups to your home or business network. And with Windows XP Mode, you can use most of your Windows XP programs in Windows 7.

In short, Yes. You will get significantly better performance with XP Pro.

Another issues with Vista can be compatibility with older software and device drivers. For example if you have an older printer, scanner, digital camera, etc., you may have problems getting it to work with Vista. Many of the compatibility issues have been remediated, but many still persist.

Many of the same compatibility issues were propagated in Windows 7, but performance was improved.

Overall XP Pro is still the best choice of the lot if you have a lot of older software that you don't want to buy new versions.
