Answer: Unlike Plasma TV screens DLP and LCD last much are longer, and are considered to both have superior image quality. LCD screens tend to have slightly better contrast, with a larger range of black and white color shades. DLP, however, still has faster refresh rates than LCD (although LCD has been vastly improved in this area over the last two years). This can have implications if you are really into high-action motion (sports, action movies), because movement may seem a little blurred with LCD at times. Also, you'll want to remember that in order for you to get the best color out of your LCD, you have to sit right in front of it. LCD TVs also have a slightly shorter lifespan than DLPs, with only 45,000 to 60,000 hours compared to 75,000 hours or more. As far as price goes, LCD and DLP are still more expensive than Plasma, but like all things in time, their price has been coming down. And right now, DLP is slightly more expensive than LCD, but not by much. DLP, in our eyes, is the best investment, at least for the next few years.

The biggest difference is that DLP is a projection technology. Most TVs do not use projection screens.

An LCD is an elaborate, electrically controlled color filter. The light comes from either a florescent tube or a bank of LEDs. A plasma TV set generates light much like your old CRT Television; a phosphor is activated and emits photons of a specific color. The advantage of an LCD is that they use much less power than a plasma and do not suffer from image burn in as plasmas may. The advantage to plasmas is that they have much better response times (for showing fast moving object), better performance at extreme viewing angles and are generally cheaper than LCDs in comparable sizes.

LCD televisions use a LCD (liquid crystal display) screen (usually around 2X2") through which a bright lamp is shown and then the picture goes through a series of lenses to enlarge it for projection on the screen. Plasma sets have a glass casing which is filled with a gridwork of fine wires that actually arc at the poits where they cross over each other (one set for red, one set for blue and one set for green. The arcing causes UV light to be generated. The UV light then excites phosphors that glow in return, projecting a "bead" of color that you see through the screen. After this, we'd then go into a ton of techno-babble, but you can find out more by searching the web.

HD TV is a set of standards for high definition television signals, 1080 line and 720 line resolutions. The signal format is completely independent of the display device and can be shown on any monitor capable of displaying HD signals.

LCD is a type of display (CRT and plasma being the other two commonly available). An LCD television will either be standard definition or high definition and the manual will say if it is capable of showing HD signals.

An LCD TV can be HD or high definition.

The difference between a HD tv and a LCD tv is that an LCD tv is liquid crystal display meaning the screen itself is comprised of crysals and HD tv means high definition television

There are two technologies that are commonly called LED television. The difference isn't immediately obvious.

The most common version of LED television during 2011 is actually an LCD television with an LED back light. Other LCD televisions use fluorescent lighting behind the liquid crystal screen. In both cases, the light is allowed through the LCD shutters as required to generate specific colors and intensities in each part of the image.

The other version of LED television has no back lighting but uses sets of red, green and blue "organic LEDs" (OLEDs) to directly generate the image. One set of three OLEDs is used for every pixel so an HD television will have (typically) 1920 x 1080 sets across the screen. Because the display is generated with a single layer of components, the overall depth of the case can be reduced. LCD shutters do not completely block the light generated from the back light and therefore have limits on how dark a pixel can become. OLEDs on the other hand emit no light whatsoever when they are off, so they have the potential for higher contrast ratios than LCD. LCD shutters take a relatively long time to turn on and off. Sometime, this can result in smeared images with fast moving changes to the image. OLED displays typically have a far faster response time and so should not suffer from image lagging or smearing.

The technology isn't new: Large television displays in arenas and sports grounds have used direct LED image generation for many years. As LED devices are becoming smaller, so it is possible to build domestic size direct LED displays. This technology has yet to mature but as it develops, it is likely to offer higher contrast displays and with the somewhat simpler components, perhaps lower cost displays as well. At present, however, the cost of OLED televisions is considerably higher, the screen sizes are smaller, and their availability is limited.

In terms of image resolution, both LCD (with LED and fluorescent lighting) and OLED televisions will support similar resolutions so one will not offer a higher resolution than the other.

Plasma screen televisions tend to operate more efficiently than lcd televisions. This means that the device will not heat up as much as lcd televisions, which is good because heat can lead to equipment damage.

I recall that a plasma screen is just a flat surface. It would be as if you are picking up a frame picture. The other is shape like a box and that is what you would be picking up.

What is a DLP television?

A DLP is a digital light projection tv. Sometimes it's a projector and sometimes it's a rear projection tv, The advantage lies in the price advantage gained at very large screen sizes. For example a 72 inch DLP TV or projector would cost significantly less than other types. However it can be expensive to replace the lamps, which all have a limited lifetime. You should research the subject carefully before buying one.

What is unique about DLP televisions?

DLP technology is owned by Texas Instruments, and is a new technology coming out that allows a projected picture to have great color that will not fade away like the colors of an LCD. The website www.dlp.com has all the information about why DLP technology is unique and desirable.

Which televisions are better, LED or LCD?

There's not much of a difference, the quality really depends on the brand. The biggest difference between LED and LCD is that LCD has fluorescent lamps in it and LED has LED lights in the back of the screen.
