What is the difference between a bachelor of fine arts and a BA degree? In: College Degrees |
[Edit] |
Answer
The BFA is usually earned by artistic performers such as painters, dancers, musicians, sculptors, playwrights, actors, etc. It is a 4-year degree, but it is not usually as marketable as a BA or BS since much of the coursework involves participation in the arts rather than academics.
The BA and BS are both 4-year degrees, but they tend to have different majors and core course work may differ. Theoretical sciences like biology, physics, geology, chemistry, math, etc., and applied sciences like engineering and computer programming usually lead to a BS. Humanities majors like English, communications, history, philosophy, religious studies, etc., usually lead to a BA.
Some fields, such as education and psychology, offer either a BA or BS program. They differ in the amount of science v. philosopy one studies.
Some fields, such as writing, offer either a BFA or BA degree. Those seeking to teach writing usually go for the BA, which is often more academic, while those who seek to write novels or plays will take the creative writing classes offered in the BFA program to hone their creative writing skills.
