Memory Stick (note capitals) is a Sony brand name for a memory device used mostly in Sony cameras, it is vey flat in shape, almost like a small Chewing Gum stick. A flash drive is a USB device, I'm sure you know what one looks like. Many people say memory stick when they mean flash drive, because flash drives are somewhat stick shaped. Another term for flash drive is 'pen drive'.

It depends on what you are using

example:

for a phone, the data card is how much data you can stream off of your

wifi/2g/3g/4g/etc... per second, ex. 50kb/sec which is the average stream rate for world wide smart phones like iphones and androids...

a memory card is where you save data from files, or access codes such as pressing Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V, or if you are using a software like adobe dreamweaver: everything you do is formed from a code which you can view by going to any website and pressing Ctrl+U...

Two things you may have heard of are flash drives and memory cards. Both may seem similar. However, they are actually two different products.

Flash drives are a kind of portable device. Inside each flash drive are two components. One is a flash memory chip for storing data. The second is a miniature circuit board. Both of these typically exist in a small plastic case that is about the size of a thumb. This is why flash drives are sometimes referred to as thumb drives.

Another very important part of each flash drive is something referred to as a universal serial bus connector. You may know this component better by the shortened name USB connector. This means that each flash drive can be connected to a computer via a USB input just like cameras, keyboards, and numerous other devices.

Flash drives were introduced to consumers in 2000. Originally, they only had a storage capacity of about eight megabytes. Today, flash drives can store as much as 16 gigabytes. This space can be used for anything from spreadsheets to movie files.

However, it is the portability aspect that has perhaps been the most responsible for making flash drives extremely popular. A person can simply save their work on one computer to the drive and take it home with them. This way students and office employees can easily transport large files from computer to computer without having to rely on the internet for moving that information from place to place.

Memory cards, on the other hand, are very similar to flash drives but also different. Like flash drives, memory cards have small flash memory chips that can store a large amount of information. They are also both very portable due to their small size.

The technology, in the end, is the same. However, memory cards are a kind of consumer product that is marketed for different uses than what is usually referred to as a flash drive. Flash drives are usually bought to be used with personal computers. Memory cards, on the other hand, are usually used with phones, cameras, and game consoles. Memory cards used for these purposes will generally not be compatible with a regular PC.

The fact that the memory stick is write protected will not prevent you "reading" the contents. Thus there is no problem in making the copy from the stick to the memory card.

What is the difference of memory card and memory stick on psp?

"Memory stick" usually refers to a general-purpose memory-containing device that can plug into a computer's USB port. The computer sees the memory as an additional drive. A memory stick is also called a thumb drive or flash drive. The memory stick device is externally a case that can be easily handled and kept in a pocket or on a lanyard or key chain. The memory stick is inserted temporarily into a computer and used to transfer information to or from one computer to another, although there is now other equipment, such as audio equipment, that can read the device. "Memory card" usually refers to a small, thin memory-containing card that is used as the main data storage in devices such as cell phones and digital cameras. The memory card has exposed contacts and thus is usually left completely protected inside the device using it. It may, however, be removed and used to transfer data to computers, printers, or other equipment. In fact, you can obtain a small memory-card carrier, having a USB plug, that holds the memory card. That memory-containing, USB-pluggable device is now, for all purposes, a memory stick.

Does a DSi need a memory stick?

It doesn't 'need' a memory card (Memory Stick is a Sony card, the DSi uses SD cards), you can play games without using one. A memory card would be for storing lots of photographs, MP3s or DSi store games.
