The difference is the density of the nature. A forest is more dense than woods.

My understanding is that woods would primarily comprise of similar kinds of trees with very much nothing else. Whereas you would find a much larger variety of flora and indeed fauna in forests.

Woods is a general term to describe any amount or section of trees a kind of universal term. Were a forest normally describes a specific kind or amount of woods. Ex. I think I will walk into those WOODS over there.

I think I will walk into that DEEP DARK FOREST over there.
