A legal immigrant is someone who went through the normal process of getting the necessary visa's and/or passport's to come to whatever country they wanted to go to. If they decide to become a citizen, since they followed the laws and got the necessary paper work, they wait the proper years and/or months they have to, apply for citizenship, and take whatever tests they are given about the country's history. And, they then become a legal citizen. The process varies by country.

An illegal immigrant is someone who crosses the border and/or enters a country without the necessary paper work (visa's/passports..), and overall breaks the law. This has become a growing problem in countries (Ex. United States and Europe) where people enter the country illegally because they don't want to do it the proper way, probably because it takes longer. These are usually people who escape a troubled homeland that has a not-so-good government and barely any jobs. They are classified as an "Alien".

A legal immigrant is someone who has entered a country after obtaining the required permissions such as a Visa, and who continues to meet the requirements of that permission.

An illegal immigrant is someone who has entered a country without the required permissions (by being smuggled in, for example) or who has stayed beyond the time permitted by those permissions (as in overstaying a Visa).
