What is the difference between a keyboard and a piano? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Well, except for a Rhodes or a Kurzweil...
Answer
You don't need a power cord for a piano.
Answer
If it can only make the sound of an acoustic piano, it's a "piano"; if it can make other sounds in addition to a piano sound, it's a "keyboard." Those can be either synthesizers (which modify waveforms produced by oscillators built into the instrument), sample players (which play the sounds of (usually) acoustic instruments recorded into the device) or samplers (which have recording circuitry built into the instrument).
Keyboard vs. Piano
Keyboard is an electric version of the piano. The sounds from a piano are made by the mechanical action of the keys hitting mallets on strings.
New Answer Headline
Most keyboards provide many different instrument sounds, in addition to the basic piano sound. Even fairly inexpensive ones usually also offer preprogrammed rhythms (waltz, rock, salsa, etc.) and "auto-chord" accompaniment, which provides a harmonic background against which you can play a melody. Higher end keyboards have touch sensitivity, allowing you to vary your volume by how hard you strike a key, and midi capacity, which lets you connect your keyboard to your computer to use music-writing and practice software.
Even a high quality keyboard isn't a substitute for the sound of a good piano, but it's an affordable way to get started playing, and has the advantage of portability. If you're considering buying a keyboard, I would suggest going for one with full size keys, as opposed to the "miniature" options out there. You don't have to have the full 88-key range of the piano, but the keys themselves should be the same size as piano keys. This is especially important if you're planning to study with a piano teacher, since you will probably play on a real piano during your lessons.
Answer
a keyboard is electronic whereas a piano is a percussion instrument meaning it makes it's music by being struck.
Answer
Keyboards can also produce many different sounds, for instance keyboards can emulate a guitar, or even a drumset.. not just a piano.
Answer
Keyboard is a general term referring to the human interface component of many musical instruments. Any instrument with a key configuration similar to a piano or pipe organ is loosely considered to be a 'keyboard'. For instance, a xylophone is a keyboard percussion instrument.
A piano is strictly the accoustic instrument that we recognize with the hammers and strings, etc. Even the term 'Digital Piano' is a bit of a misnomer as these instruments are not strictly pianos but an electronic imitation of one.
So all Pianos are (or more properly, have) Keyboards but not all Keyboards are Pianos.
Answer
Pianos are referred to as an acoustic instrument which produces its own unique sound. Keyboards usually refers to electronic instrumentation, however the keys are laid out the same as the piano.
