For instance, to a mechanical engineer an engine produces energy or power whereby a machine consumes it.

Technically, there is no difference between an engine and a motor. However, by common usage the term 'engine' is usually applied to heat engines (e.g. internal combustion engines, steam engines, etc.) whereas the term 'motor' is more-widely applied to electric machines.

Motors are typically small single function machines. A hydraulic piston in a cylinder used to move a damper up or down is a motor. The small air turbine in a pneumatic drill is a motor. An electric motor regardless of size is a motor, what all of these have in common is singularly moving parts designed for a single function. Engines on the other hand Have multiple moving parts with several functions being performed, such as lubrication, speed control, drive train, and the like. Simple engines, such as levers, screws, or pulleys can be driven by motors or more complex engines. In essence the terminology for motors and engines is dependent on their primary use and complexity.
