Technically a portrait is a picture of a person, usually looking at the artist and posing for them, although it is used to refer to any painting in loose terms. A still life is normally some fruit or a tree or other object that does not move.
Any painting depicting a human form is figurative. A portrait, however, is focused upon conveying the individual nature of that particular person. A painting of some dude riding the bus may just be a study or a depiction of a situation, but if the painting gives you a sense of who this particular man is, in a way that captures him in a more timeless sense, it could be considered a portrait.
Still life's are often constructed on tables so that they can be comfortably photographed however tabletop Photography usually refers to a sub-set of commercial product photography. Tabletop photos tend to use gradated backgrounds wherein the top of the photo is dark and slopes down to a lighter color and the product is isolated rather than being set up in a way where it looks like it's being used, or could be in use. Tabletop photos are often found in large catalogs.
Still, life photography is photography of objects with no people in the picture. Object photography usually combines a number of objects into a single picture. The main purpose of object photography is to present the object in a special light, with emphasis on the composition, shot angle, lighting, and color.
A still life depicts some inanimate objects. A portrait depicts a person. A landscape depicts a landscape.
Still life photography basically deals with static objects but object photography deals basically with a certain set of commercial products used for advertising.

A "still life" is a common work of art in which artists can illustrate a variety of everyday objects (vases, sports memorabilia, flowers, a cup of pencils, a stack of books- these are just a few examples we have completed in my art classes). Making sure to correctly implement shading and texture are important in creating a still life drawing. A fruit still life is perhaps the most common variety of the assignment, in which artists depict an arrangement of fruit.
