a tan is where reguler exposure to the sun causes the skin to get darker to protect itself from the UV rays given off by the sun.

a burn is where to much sun at one time burns the skin and turns it red due to damage.

A sunburn is an extreme tan from being in the sun for much too long, usually turning bright red and literally burning a few layers of skin. The best way to take care of it is to smooth aloe into it and give the burn air.

before tanning beds and crap slang...nothying, but since then Id imagine a suntan is from anything (bed/sunshine) but sunscreen tanning is from the sun only.
