Those are old English words for "growing" and "shrinking".

When the moon is 'waxing', the lit-up portion is growing from day to day,

and it's heading towards Full Moon.

When the moon is 'waning', the lit-up portion is shrinking from day to day,

and it's heading for New Moon.

  • Waxing = growing larger
  • Waning = getting smaller

These terms are often applied to the phases of the moon.

Waxing refers to the Moon is growing larger. Waning refers to the Moon getting smaller (this has been mentioned above).

The terms waxing and waning both describe the moon between its full and new phases. When the moon appears to be getting bigger, it is referred to as waxing of the Moon. The part of the moon that we see will appear to be the right side of the moon.

When the moon appears to be getting smaller, it is referred to as waning of the Moon. The part of the moon that we see will appear to be the left side of the moon.

"Waxing" means 'growing'.

The visible part of the moon is increasing as time goes on, during

the roughly two weeks from New Moon until Full Moon.

"Waning" means 'shrinking'.

The visible part of the moon is decreasing as time goes on, during

the roughly two weeks from Full Moon until the next New Moon.

Definitions (these are actually archaic English words rarely seen anymore in everyday usage except special contexts):

  • waxing - increasing or getting stronger
  • waning - decreasing or getting weaker

"His enthusiasm for the project was waning rapidly."

"She looked up at the sky. The gibbous moon was waxing. It would soon be full."

They are opposite sides of the same cyclical process; the Moon is new, waxes for 2 weeks until it is full, then wanes for 2 weeks until it is new. Repeat endlessly.

We have another pair of words "ebb" and "flow", with the very similar meanings, and also caused by the Moon. The tide is low; it flows for a few hours as the ocean water rises until it is high, then the tide ebbs for a few hours until it is low. Again, it repeats endlessly.

The moon becomes fuller as it waxes and lessens as it wanes. That's just the way it is.
