White matter consists of neurons that have axons coated in something called myelin, which allows the neuron to fire faster. Gray matter consists of neurons that are not protected by myelin, and fire slower than myelinated neurons.

The difference between white matter and gray matter is that white matter contains myelinated axons and the gray does not. This myelination is fat insulation surrounding the axons that insulates and makes nerve impulses happen faster.

Gray matter consists of neuron cell bodies, dendrites, and unmyelinated axons. In the brain, it is located externally, while in the spinal cord it is internal.

White matter consists of bundles of axons that ARE myelinated, giving it the whitish appearance for which it is named. In the brain, it is located internally, and in the spinal cord, it is external. (Opposite from gray matter). White matter is responsible for learning, emotions, processing sensory information, etc.

grey matter- the centre area of the spinal cord that contains cell bodies, their axons and their dendrites.

white matter- the outer layer of the spinal cord that contains only myelin coated axons.

White matter neurons are myelinated, meaning they have a fatty sheath on their axon. This helps protect the axon as well as allowing the signal to pass faster. Gray metter does not have this myelination and act much slower than myelinated axons

The gray matter consists of neuronal cell bodies where the "action" happens. The white matter of the brain ismyelinated (insulated) axons that transmit messages from one neuron cell body to another, a muscle cell, or a gland.
