Patrons in a public library are all ages and are usually more diverse in all other ways. Patrons at an academic library are made up of the college community in some form or fashion and at a special library the patrons are even more select, comprised of whatever community the special library serves.

Academic libraries are associated to a university or college and contain resources that are focused in the areas of study of those institutions. Special libraries are libraries that collect material on a very specific subject area and are usually privately funded. National libraries are usually government sponsored, and amass information from a wide variety of sources all around the country. Public libraries are funded by the government and focus on access to information for everyone, and literacy initiatives. They collect material in a range of areas that are of interest for their user population.

An academic library refers to a library within a post-secondary institution, such as a college or university. It contains a collection that is relevant to students and staff within that institution, and that supports both learning and research. A special library can refer to a special collections library, a rare books library, a private library, a corporate library, or any other specialized library collection. These collections tend to be smaller than those within an academic library, and have a narrower focus. For example, a rare books library might consist mainly of 18th century literature; and an oil company might have a corporate library that contains information resources pertaining to the oil industry.
