In subtractive processes, the sculptor begins with a mass of material larger than the finished work and removes material, or subtracts from that mass until the work achieves its finished form. Carving is a subtractive process. In additive processes, the sculptor builds the work, adding material as the work proceeds. Modeling, construction, and assemblage are additive processes.

Subtractive art is made by taking something away from the art piece to create the interest. Carving a sculpture is subtractive because you take away pieces of the stone. Using an eraser to draw on a graphite-covered surface is subtractive because you are removing graphite.

An additive process in art involves adding material to the piece. A subtractive process involves taking material away from the piece. Coiling a clay pot is additive because you add clay. Carving a stone statue is subtractive because you take away stone.

This is a second answer. I noticed that this question was categorized under color, so if you mean the additive and subtractive process in color mixing, it's a different answer.

The additive color mixing process involves light. The primary colors in light are red, blue, and green. Each of these colors represents one third of the color spectrum. Buy combining red, blue, and green light in varying amounts you can create all colors. This is referred to as additive because you start with black (darkness) and add parts of the spectrum until all parts are present and you have white light. Your computer monitor uses the additive color mixing process, because it has red, blue, and green pixels.

The subtractive color mixing process involves paint, ink, dyes and so on. The primary colors in these media are magenta, cyan, and yellow. Each of these colors absorb one third of the color spectrum. By combining these colors in various combinations, you can in theory create all colors. In practice, because there are no perfect subtractive primary colors available, you will not actually be able to make all colors. Combining all three primary colors makes black in theory. This is referred to as subtractive color mixing because you start with a white surface which reflects the full light spectrum, and you subtract portions of the spectrum by adding magenta, cyan, and yellow color. Adding all will in theory produce black because they would absorb the entire spectrum. Your printer uses the subtractive color mixing process because it has magenta, cyan, and yellow ink. It also has black because as I said, there are no perfect subtractive primary colors, so black helps create a wider range of dark colors.

A subtractive process requires you to take something away from the material. If you use an eraser with charcoal, it is subtractive because it removes charcoal. If you carve a piece of linoleum it is subtractive because it removes linoleum.

Subtractive drawing is a process where the drawing surface is completely covered in graphite or charcoal, then erased to make the image.

In art what is an additive process?

An additive process is one in which something is added to the art piece to give it interest. A 2-dimensional additive process is painting, you add more paint to the canvas. A 3-dimensional additive process is coiling a clay pot, you add more clay.

Which sculpture process is additive and which is subtractive?

An additive process in art means adding material to the piece. Building a sculpture from clay is additive because you add clay. A subtractive process means subtracting material away from the piece. Carving a stone statue is subtractive because you take away stone.

Is printing an additive or subtractive process?

Printing is a subtractive process; all the colors combine to form black.

Distinguish between additive and subtractive color mixing processes?

The additive color process is mixing lights while the subtractive color process is mixing paints and dyes. In the additive color process when you mix all of the main colors together: red, green, and blue: you get white(hence the name additive) while if you do the exact same thing in the subtractive color process: cyan, magenta, and yellow: you get black(hence the name subtractive because in order to get white you'd have to take away all of the colors).
