What is peninsula means?

A peninsula a piece of land that has three sides of it surrounded by land. Another answer: What the above writer meant was that a peninsula is a peice of land that has three sides surrounded by water. Actually, a peninsula is a area of land nearly surrounded by water but also has a section that is attached to a mainland by an isthmus. Florida is a peninsula, Hawaii is not because it is completely surrounded by water and is therefore an island. for example: Hawaii is a peninsula-+

What is the example of a peninsula on a map?

A peninsula is a piece of land which is almost surrounded by water but which is connected to the mainland by a narrow neck of land, called an isthmus. The Latin roots of peninsula are 'pene', meaning 'almost' and 'insula' meaning 'island', and so a peninsula is an 'almost island' connected to the continent by a small neck of land. An example of a peninsula is the Iberian Peninsula, which is comprised of Spain and Portugal. Another example would be the state of Florida in the US.

Is Florida an island?

The definition of isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger masses of land. This would not appear to be Florida because it does not connect two larger masses of land. What Florida is, is a peninsula, which is a body of land enclosed on three sides by water, jutting out from a larger body of land. Source in part: Answers.com
