No, not by a long shot. Mental retardation may be caused by genetics, problems during pregnancy, birth problems, problems that may occur after birth, socio-economic deprivation and other accidental causes. If an individual has an IQ that is generally 70 or below with co-occuring deficits in major life areas such as communication, mobility, learning, self direction, etc., mental retardation may be diagnosed.

Mental illness can be created by stress, heredity, genetic predisposition, or any of many other factors. It is not predictable or screenable. It can also vary from mild to severe with huge variances in presentation. It can also appear later in life to people with perfectly normal IQ's and reasoning skills.

Mental Retardation is basically having an IQ below 70, Autism is a mental disorder that causes social difficulties etc, but many people with autism have an IQ well above 100.

Mental retardation is a catch-all term that refers to people who fall outside the norm in skills that we all take for granted, and who usually need some sort of supervision or assistance in coping with daily life.

People with autism have a neurological disorder that is not yet completely understood. It affects the way they relate to the world, but not necessarily their ability to learn to function in it. In fact, the insights that come from their unique viewpoints have proven in some cases to be extremely valuable

Mental Retardation is still a co-morbid of autism, so they often come together, but they're also many autistics are the oppesit of Mentally Retarded.

A learning disability and an intellectual disability are two distinctly separate conditions.

People who have a learning disability generally have average or above-average IQ scoring. A learning disability is a neurological disorder that affects the brain's communication channels - its ability to receive, process, store and respond to information. Alternative learning strategies can be used to support people who have a learning disability to more effectively process received information.

Learning disabilities and their effects are different from person to person, so a person's pattern of learning abilities need to be understood in order to find good, effective strategies for compensation.

People who have an intellectual disability (also referred to as a developmental disability) have below-average IQ scoring. An intellectual disability is typically a result of a genetic condition, complications during birth or an acquired brain injury prior to the age of 16 or 18. This impact's the person's ability to learn and develop at the same pace as their non-disabled peers.

An intellectual disability can have limitations on one's ability to function in areas of daily life, such as communication, self-care, and getting along in social situations and learning activities. Depending on one's ability, these limitations may require life-long support.

A person with mental retardation has a low IQ and difficulty with tasks associated with daily living. A person with a learning disability may have an average or above average IQ but has difficulty in a specific area. For example, a very smart child may have trouble reading. This child is not mentally retarded but rather may have a learning disability.

Mental illness is when it's triggered by something and becomes a bigger deal later on in life (even though you may have been born with it) e.g depression, bipolar, sktizophrenia. Mental retardation is a different part of the brain. and is usually noticeable from birth, and shows up in brain scans. And is more likely to have physical traits, and is more commonly asscociated with physcial traits e.g. extreme twitching, or any kind of physical retardation (clawed hands e.t.c) These include Minor learning difficluties, dyslexia, or more extreme illnesses like down symers. e.g people with the same mental retardation usually look similar and have similar physical traits. Restardation is usually a more social/physically and easier to recognise illness. much more extreme.

Mental retardation is more commonly referred to as having a developmental disability. These are individuals who have lower than average IQs and depending on the degree of disability can be completely dependent on others or live in supervised apartments with roommates and have jobs and relationships like any other person. An example is someone with Down's Syndrome although many other disorders are under the developmental umbrella.

A mental disorder would be more likely referred to as a psychiatric disorder. There are many types of such disorders and varying degrees of disability. Some live their whole lives in institutions, some bounce in and out of them and some are fully functioning members of society with high paying jobs and families. An example would be depression, bi-polar or anxiety to name just a few.

What does mentally retarded mean?

Medical Encyclopedia: Mental Retardation Definition Mental retardation is a developmental disability that first appears in children under the age of 18. It is defined as an intellectual functioning level (as measured by standard tests for intelligence quotient) that is well below average and significant limitations in daily living skills (adaptive functioning). Description Mental retardation occurs in 2.5-3% of the general population. About 6-7.5 million mentally retarded individuals live in the United States alone. Mental retardation begins in childhood or adolescence before the age of 18. In most cases, it persists throughout adulthood. A diagnosis of mental retardation is made if an individual has an intellectual functioning level well below average and significant limitations in two or more adaptive skill areas. Intellectual functioning level is defined by standardized tests that measure the ability to reason in terms of mental age (intelligence quotient or IQ). Mental retardation is defined as IQ score below 70-75. Dictionary: mental retardation n. Subnormal intellectual development as a result of congenital causes, brain injury, or disease and characterized by any of various cognitive deficiencies, including impaired learning, social, and vocational ability. Also called mental deficiency. Neurological Disorder: Mental retardation Definition Mental retardation (MR) is a developmental disability that first appears in children under the age of 18. It is defined as a level of intellectual functioning (as measured by standard intelligence tests) that is well below average and results in significant limitations in the person's daily living skills (adaptive functioning). Sci-Tech Encyclopedia: Mental retardation A developmental disability characterized by significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, with concurrent deficits in adaptive behavior. The causes are many and include both genetic and environmental factors as well as interactions between the two. In most cases the diagnosis is not formally made until children have entered into school settings. In the preschool years, the diagnosis is more likely to be established by evidence of delayed maturation in the areas of sensory-motor, adaptive, cognitive, social, and verbal behaviors. By definition, evidence of mental retardation must exist prior to adulthood, where vocational limitation may be evident, but the need for supervision or support may persist beyond the usual age of social emancipation. http://www.answers.com/mentally%20retarded

School performance of a child with mild mental retardation?

Depending on the IQ level of a child, most children diagnosed with mild mental retardation will start experiencing scholastic problems from about Grade 3 to Grade 6. This is mostly because the academic level of school work starts requiring increased abstract thinking and complex cognitive processing, which the child is unable to do. It is usually possible to differentiate between mild mental retardation (or intellectual disability) and a learning disorder as the former is more pervasive and the child struggles with all school work, not just one specific aspect of learning (such as spelling, reading, writing or arithmetic. It is important to note, though, that given a supportive learning environment with individual attention and allowing the child to work at his/her pace and preference, a child with mild mental retardation is quite capable of reaching an adequate level of school achievement - sufficient to lead an independent, product life as an adult.
