The pharmaceutical Industry is a branch of the chemical industry. The pharmaceutical industry is the branch of the chemical industry that specializes in the development and production of drugs. The overwhelming majority of the drugs made by the pharmaceutical industry are controlled substances as defined by the US federal government. The chemical industry on the other hand is a very broad industry. The chemical industry develops and produces everything from household cleaning products to pesticides for farming to chemicals used in manufacturing and in labs. Both industries are often criticized for their business practices. In some cases this criticism is justified. In the majority of cases however the criticism to which both the chemical and the pharmaceutical industries are subject is unjustified and misplaced. Both industries provide many of the most useful products in existence. In many cases, the products of these industries are life-saving. It is pretty safe to say that the chemical and pharmaceutical industries' products save more lives every day than those of any other industry in the world. In addition to products that save lives, the chemical industry develops and manufactures products that improve the daily lives of people around the world; everything from household cleaners to crop fertilizers to grooming products. Without both of these industries, the world would be a drastically changed place. The changes not only to our daily lives but to our survival in medical situations would definitely not be for the better. Without these industries, the world would bear a striking resemblance to the Dark Ages.
