Computer science is essentially an expansion of Computing. Both will focus on broadly similar subject areas, however a Computer Science course will (or at least should) provide a deeper understanding of the theory behind the practical Computing applications. For example a Computing course will (in most cases) contain some programming element. This will likely include the Syntax and some limited Semantics of a given language. Whereas a Computer Science course will cover the same material but also focus on areas such as Encapsulation, Polymorphism, Design Methods and Design Patterns. In essence a Computing course will tell you what to do, a Computer Science course will tell you what to do and why to do it. Jimbobbery Not neccessarily. I have studied computing to HND level. I have used procedural and OOP techniques and have become familiar with encapsulation, polymorphism and all sorts of design principles like UML and SSADM. I think you are undermining Computing as a subject. They are 2 of the same, with computer science maybe slightly more weighted to theory rather than practice.

Mathematicians derive theory from such areas as fields, rings, equations, theorems, axioms, and laws. They are sometimes referred to as "pure" or "purist" mathematicians to differentiate from fields integrated with applied mathematics.

Computer scientists derive theory from complexity theory, algorithms, data and applied mathematics. They are sometimes referred to as "informaticians".

Complications arise because both groups can solve problems but from two different perspectives. Often times mathematicians first create a theory, prove it, and then apply it to a data set with such mathematical assumptions (e.g. "a gaussian distribution"). On the other hand, computer scientists often first study the data using applied mathematical methods (e.g. regression) and then later construct an algorithm or method specific to such data. One could say mathematicians are "top down" (i.e. math to data) and computer scientists are "bottom up" (i.e. data to math).

Although there are strong overlaps and exchange between both fields, the two groups have strengths and weaknesses. For example, computer scientists have the advantage of iterative computation, mixing logical algorithms with applied mathematics, experimental approaches, and the actual data. Mathematicians have the advantage of a deeper philosophy of pure mathematics that allows them to create a general purpose theory without any application or data in mind.

Both fields intermix with themselves (mathematicians becoming computer scientists and computer scientists becoming mathematicians). Both fields also integrate with engineering but often in different ways. For example, Mathematicians with Mechanics and Computer Scientists with Signal Processing.
