What is the difference between gelato and ice cream?

Answer

Italian-style gelato is made with fruit and water (sorbetto) or dairy-based gelato is made with milk having about 3-5% butterfat milk, unlike American ice cream that uses 10-18% butterfat cream.  There are other variations.
