  • The lower calorific value or Net calorific value (NCV) which supposes that the products of combustion contain the water of combustion to the vapor state. The heat contained in this water is not recovered.
  • The higher calorific value or Gross calorific value (GCV) which supposes that the water of combustion is entirely condensed. The heat contained in this water is recovered.

when we brn the fuels containing hydrogen,it will react with the oxygen in the air and produce steam.if we condense this steam,it will release some amount of heat.this heat is called latent heat of condensation.so in addition to the normal amount of heat liberated on burning, latent heat is also added .thus there is increase in the amount of heat.this is called higher calorific value or gross calorific value..

instead of condensing the steam if we are allowing it to let it go,there will be no latent heat of condensation.so on comparing it to the gross calorific value, its amount of heat will be less.this is called lower calorific value or net calorific value..

so, L.C.V = H.C.V - Latent heat of condensation.

What the calorific value of coal?

It varies based on the type and grade of coal. The heat value is less for bituminous than for anthracite, etc.

How does the calorific value of pellets compare with oil and gas?

The calorific value of one litre of extra light oil amounts to 10 kWh, as does the calorific value of 1m3 of gas. It is therefore true that: 2kg pellets ~ 1 litre extra light oil ~ 1m3 gas. In terms of price pellets do significantly better than oil and LPG.

Is LPG has high calorific value than methane?

Methane is CH4 and LPG(Butane) is C4H10. The energy in the Carbon Carbon bond (C-C)is more than that in the Carbon Hydrogen bond (C- H). Since there are more number of C-C bonds in butane (LPG) than in methane, calorific value of LPG or butane is higher than that of methane.

Why do chipped potatoes have a higher energy value than mashed or baked potatoes?

Potato chips are deep fried and have high calorific value with more energy than boiled or baked potatoes that have no added hydrocarbons in fried oil.

Is cooked rice more calorific than raw?

How do you differentiate the meaning of less and less than?

They are the same - except that in "less", something has a value which is less than some implied value - often the current value. For example, "Please can you make less noise?" implies "Please can you make less noise than you are making now?"

Why is the value of a - 1 less than the value of a?

The - before the 1 represents it is less, so the -1 will always be less than a, since the - is before the one, and so that means the 1 is less than a.

Why bituminous shows higher calorific value although anthracite is best quality of coal?

i think because sometimes anthracite has more ash and vm than bituminous
