Leukemia and blood cancer are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but they have specific meanings within the context of medical terminology:

Leukemia:

Leukemia is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. It specifically affects the white blood cells, which play a crucial role in the body's immune system.

In leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that do not function properly and may crowd out healthy blood cells.

Leukemia can be categorized into different types based on the speed of cell growth and the type of white blood cells affected. The main types include acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Symptoms of leukemia may include fatigue, frequent infections, bruising, bleeding, pale skin, and swollen lymph nodes.

Blood Cancer:

Blood cancer is a broader term that encompasses various types of cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system.

Blood cancer includes not only leukemia but also other types of cancers that involve abnormal cell growth within the blood and bone marrow. These may include lymphomas and myelomas.

Lymphomas are cancers that start in the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. They can be categorized as Hodgkin lymphoma or non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Myelomas are cancers that start in plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to help fight infections.

PANCYTOPENIA is a pathological condition in what ALL the blood cell types are reduced.

That means, the

- red blood cells (anaemia),

- white blood cells (Leukopenia), and the

- platelets (Thrombocytopenia).

That condition could be caused by

- disease/malignancy (lymphoma, leukaemia where the infected cells out-crowd the functioning/normal ones)

- chemo/radio therapy (hematopoietic stem cell in bone marrow destroyed/damaged)

- drugs/medications

- viral infections

- deficiency (Vitamin B12)

and

- APLASTIC ANAEMIA

In aplastic anaemia the hematopoietic progenitor stem cells are reduced in numbers and the remaining ones are not functioning.

The reason could be

- inherited (Fanconi)

- acquired (eg: viral infection )hepatitis, Infectious Mononucleosis, HIV), also toxins.
