Both are used to store documents as photographic visual images. The images may be produced either via Photography or by a special printer connected to a computer. Both need a viewer to display and magnify the images. The difference is in the physical layout of the images. With microfilm all the images are recorded in a single straight line one after the other along the film strip. The strip is very long (sorry don't know how long) wound on a spool and is typically (I believe) 35mm wide. With microfiche the material is made into separate sheets round about 6 inches wide by about 4 inches high. The images appear in columns on each fiche, typically 10 images in each column and 12 rows of columns, though this may depend on the application.

Provided there is an index to the fiche so that you know one to look on it is quicker to locate required images on fiche than on film. Without an index it is hopeless. I once worked (for about 4 years) in an office with the filling on fiche, the fiche were in boxes each holding 2000, the boxes were in racks 10 high and there were around 30 racks. I earlier worked for Kodak in the research laboratory where the special fiche film was being developed.
