Although in common usage, the terms are considered synomynous, dwarfism is a recognised medical condition. Midget is a term which is considered somewhat offensive as it has no medical definition.

Sometimes midget is used to describe someone who is proportionally small, whereas dwarf describes someone with short arms and legs. In fact, these are both forms of dwarfism.
