∙ 15y ago* You can tell just by looking at them; watermelons have smooth, hard green skins, and cantaloupes have rough, slightly spongy beige colored skins. Watermelons are usually bigger as well. There are several differences between cantaloupes and watermelons: * Canteloupes are generally round in shape; watermelons are more often longer although some varieties are roundish. * Canteloupes have a rough textured, beigish-color skin (when ripe); watermelons are generally smooth and green. * Canteloupe meat is orange colored; watermelon meat is reddish-pink. * Canteloupe seeds are enclosed in the center of the fruit; watermelon seeds are disbursed throughout the fruit. * Canteloupe and watermelon flavors resemble and compliment each other in that they are both melons, but watermelon tends to be sweeter, more juicy, and contains more fiberous tissue.
