Some people would say that history is true and that myth is just fanciful, but I think it has more to do with 'evidence'. History has evidence behind it - often written from the winning side's point of view, but evidence nonetheless. Myth is indeed fanciful, but it may derive from 'history' for which the evidence has now been lost - possibly because it was never written down. When actions are documented it becomes difficult to 'enhance' them in later times. Without documentary backing it becomes easier for a storyteller to magnify the deeds of some warrior or hero.

A myth is a story that might be believed by some people, or might have been believed by some people of the past. It may in fact have some basis in truth, but gets embellished over time. A story might be entirely fictional, such as the plot of a novel, drama or movie, and everybody knows it is fiction.

Myths, stories, fables, legends, folk tales and beliefs are close relatives.

Generally, a myth is a story of supposed historical events that served to illustrate the ideals and world view of a people, explain beliefs and practices or explain natural phenomenon before scientific explanations were available. Such stories comprise rich collections of world mythologies for every culture such as Greek and Roman, Inuit and Norse mythology and explain the world according to those ancient people.

The mythology of every particular group generally begins with a creation story many of which have striking similarities. Myths are populated by gods, supernatural beings, superhuman ancestors, heros and ogres. They can form the backbone of an ideology, mark historical events or rewrite history. They play a prominent role in most religions as figurative representations of belief systems. The Old Testament is comprised of portions of very ancient mythologies.

  • All myths are stories but not all stories are myths. The Greeks told the story of Apollo and Daphne to explain why Apollo favored the Laurel tree above all others, but also to explain why dew disappeared after the sun rose. Similarly, some would call the story of Noah's Ark a myth because of the religious context and unbelieveable nature of the story.
  • A fable is a short story that uses animals as characters that act and speak like people and that teaches or cautions. A fable is a purely fictitious, told to pass on some moral or ideal, usually told with fantastic or unbelievable circumstances. Examples would be Goldilocks and the Three Bears, or The Tortoise and the Hare. Check out Aesop's Fables.
  • A legend is a traditional tale popularly regarded as true but containing a mixture of fact and fiction. A legend is tale, usually told regionally and based in part in fact, usually to strengthen ones belief in his or her country or sitting lord. An example would be the Arthurian legends or the Iliad.
  • A parable is a short moral story. This form was used in the Old testament and extensively in the New Testament.
  • A folk tale is a cross between a legend and a fable. The idea is usually to promote some sort of ideal or pride, and the characters are usually based in fact, like a legend. However, usually the facts have been blown out of proportion or made up entirely to serve a purpose and are usually impossible or improbable. Excellent examples are Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyun, Robin Hood and St. George.
  • A belief is the mental acceptance of something as true without need of proof or evidence or certainty. Many beliefs are embodied, taught and handed down in all of the literary forms set forth above.

A myth is a religious tale that was, at one time, accepted as being truthful. The key here is that myths are ALWAYS religious tales that had religious implications for the people telling them.

A legend is a tale of human events that is set during a known period of human history that has a resemblance to a true event, or is told in such a way as to be very believable. As such a legend MAY or MAY NOT be based on actual events.

The story of the founding of Athens is a myth because there were gods involved. The story of Robin Hood is a legend because it's a tale of a person that you believe may have existed because of the historic nature of the tale.

A myth could be true, like a legend; and a fact is usually undeniably true.

with the science there is more of a probability that you can support a fact. A myth, I would describe it as just a saying that is really not true.
