Opiates are derived directly from the opium poppy by departing and purifying the various chemicals in the poppy. Opioids include all opiates but also include chemicals that have been synthesised in some way.
So heroine is and opioid but not an opiate. Morphine is an opiate and also an opioid.
If you take heroin, and then a drug test, you will ABSOLUTELY test positive for opiates.
Tramadol, which is an opioid, will not show positive for opiates.

Opiates are naturally occuring and are organic nitrogenous molecules possessing a pharmacutical value to humans and animals.
Morphine,Codeine and Thebaine are examples.
An opiod is either a fully synthetic or semi-synthetic alkaloid made to imitate
the action of a natural opiate alkaloid.Also considered to have pharmacutical usage in humans and animals.
"Morphones" and "codones" are a good example of this.
Hydromorphone and Oxycodone are both opiods.
That is because they are derived from the Opiates Morphine and Thebaine.

∙ 12y agoOpiates are drugs derived from opium. Opioids used to refer to synthetic opiates (drugs created to emulate opium, however different chemically). Now the term Opioid is used for the entire family of opiates including natural, synthetic and semi-synthetic.
An opioid is any agent that activates opioid receptors (protein molecules located on the membranes of some nerve cells) found principally in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. There are four broad classes of opioids:
- Endogenous opioid, naturally produced in the body, endorphins
- Opium alkaloids, such as morphine and codeine
- Semi-synthetic opioids such as heroin oxycodone, and Buprenorphine
- Fully synthetic opioids, such as methadone, that have structures unrelated to the opium alkaloids
Medical professionals use the word "opioid" to refer to the entire family of opioids, and the word "opiate" for a specific non-synthetic opioid, however, many only use "opioid". Consistent with the current definition, this website uses "opioid" to refer to all opioids and opiates.
