Pedigree dogs are purebred (both of the Dog's parents were the same breed) and have their ancestries recorded and logged by the Kennel Club. Well-bred purebred dogs are tested for possible genetic faults that could be passed down. Breeding dogs are also often Champion show dogs who are deemed as a perfect example of the breed.

Non-pedigree dogs could be purebreds without papers or crossbreeds. These dogs may or may not be tested for health and temperament. Pedigree dogs have up to five generations of family history recorded and are completely purebred. If you buy a purebred without Kennel Club pedigree papers then technically it is not purebred as you have none of the Dog's ancestry recorded to prove it.

thoroughbreds are used for racing- they have skinnier and longer legs made for running. quarter horses race 2, but they do barrel racing and only run 1/4 of a mile. i think thoroughbreds race anywhere from 3/4 of a mile to 2 miles

A pedigree is just a family tree of a person or animal. It is just a documentation of the ancestry. The parents, grandparents, or other ancestors can be of any breed or no particular breed at all. A "thoroughbred" animal is one who is a purebred and whose pedigree shows no ancestors of other breed. A thoroughbred has a pedigree, but not every pedigree shows an animal is a thoroughbred.

Also, Thoroughbred (with a capital "t") generally refers to a specific breed of horse registered by the Jockey Club. With a small "t" thoroughbred just refers to any animal of pure breed.

What is the difference between a racing horse and a normal?

Biologically there is no difference. There are several breeds that are bred for racing, the thoroughbred being arguably the most famous. Horses bred for racing are usually faster than other breeds over a given distance, but whether it is a thoroughbred, a standardbred (trotter), Arabian (renowned for endurance) or just a riding horse in a paddock, they are all horses.

What are facts about Thoroughbred foals?

Thoroughbred foals come into the world like all other breeds of horses. The gestation for horses is 320 to 340 days average. Thoroughbreds are tall horses and a lot of newborns may weigh a little more than smaller breeds which is about 100 lbs. at birth. Thoroughbred foals have very long legs and from almost the minute they are born they love to run, which is exactly what they were bred to do. Thoroughbreds usually have a bigger lung capacity so they can run longer distances. The American Quarter Horse is faster than a Thoroughbred but only for a quarter mile. The distance belongs to the Thoroughbred. Generally speaking, these horses are amazing athletes and one of the most beautiful breeds.

Are horses purebreeds or crossbreeds?

There are some purebreds, but most are the result of a cross breeds. I think the Arabian is among the oldest purebred horses, along with a few others, like the akhal-teke. Thoroughbreds, Quarter horses, Tennessee Walkers, and most other breeds are the result of crossing between at least two other breeds, however, they are considered purebred once they have been bred within that breed for a few generations. And then tehre are the breeds considered crossbreeds, like the Anglo-Arab,a cross between an Arabia and a thoroughbred. or an Appendix horse, the cross of a thoroughbred and a quarter horse. So, horses can be both a crossbreed, or a purebreed.

Why do standard bred horses race and not thorough breeds?

The American Paint Horse Association includes only horses with Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, or Thoroughbred bloodlines. So a 'Pinto' is a white and any other color in 'patches' of any breed, while a 'Paint' is white and any other color in 'patches' of the Quarter Horse, Paint or Thoroughbred breeds.
