Prejudice is a negative thought you have about an entire group of people, often an ethnic group or racial group. (Internal) Racism is a kind of prejudice where you think one race is superior over another. It has more to do with physical traits than anything else.

Difference Between Prejudice and RacismPrejudice may have nothing to do with race. It means to "prejudge", usually unfairly, but not always.

Racism is to judge or prejudge someone by their race. This is also usually but not always unfair.

  • yes. I think there is a difference also.

Prejudice to me is when you think something of SOMEONE, not a specific race.

Racism to me is to have opinions about a specific race, rather than a person.

Not much difference, no. But consider the question; racism brings up different people. Prejudice doesn't. You can be "prejudiced" against a certain type of food. However, racism involves customs, skin color, location, and all sorts of properties of "people."

Another answer:

Racism can be limited to just a belief - though you can act with racism, while prejudice is nearly always an action (or an omission of action). So you can be a racist without showing prejudice, but if you are prejudiced, there is nearly always an underlying belief such as racism, sexism, anti-gay bias, and so on.

Prejudice is a more general term in that it means to judge without evidence based on some belief. Prejudice implies jumping to conclusions or letting past experiences or perceived characteristics of a group affect your judgment and how you treat individuals. For instance, if you were robbed in the past, it would be prejudice to assume all people of the same group rob others.

To be racist means to believe a particular race is better, hence the suffix -ist. It is not merely noticing things about a race as a whole. Beliefs about a race are not always racist. They can be stereotypes, which are beliefs about a group which may not be well-founded.

A related term is discrimination, and that is unequal treatment. While not all discrimination is a type of racism, and while not all racism is discrimination, they are related to one another and overlap. Discrimination implies having authority or power to make decisions. So while badmouthing people of a particular race moving into your neighborhood would be racist, actually preventing them from doing so would be discrimination based on racism. Housing discrimination laws mean you cannot require people to be a certain race, gender, national origin, religion, or family size as a condition of moving in, and you cannot state a preference in any ads. There are a few permissible exceptions (such as disallowing children in senior citizen communities, or men from facilities for women which only have shared shower facilities).

One must first understand what each is:

  • Racism is the ability and tendency to perceive differences between one or a group and another one or a group based on race or ethnic disparity. It is a natural human behavior, a natural animal behavior to recognize one who does not belong to your group. It is neither moral nor immoral, rather it is amoral.
  • Prejudice is a preconception or preconceived notion with or without prior information, but definitely with an element of contact or experience. It can be an action, but it more often the source of an action or inaction.
  • Discrimination is the action most often associated with racism and prejudice. It is moving against or excluding based on prejudice that may result from racism but need not be a component of race at all. Common forms of discrimination are: race, gender, religion, sexual preference, sexual identity, disability or handicap, age (older or younger), socio-economic position, class, criminal history, weight, or any of an infinite list of perceived differences.

So, the difference can be said to lie in the level of expression.

Racist beliefs can be shared, but if they are, they become prejudice or discrimination.

Prejudice can be expressed typically in passive ways, but if it becomes active, it is discrimination.

Discrimination is acting upon prejudiced beliefs and/or racist perceptions.

Prejudice is against anyone or anything, like you can be prejudice against religion or let's say a color. Racism is against a race like English or Mexican.
