Ideally speaking Axles are meant for balancing/transferring Bending moment and Shafts are meant for Balancing/transferring Torque. But,they can be used interchangeably also.We can have a shaft which also transmits Torque as well as Balances bending moment and in the same way an axle can also function as shaft.Such machine elements which function as axle as well as shaft are called Axleshafts.Axleshafts are designed while taking care of the acting Bending Moment as well as Torque. A spindle is a narrow shaft that is used for rotating parts that rotate around the spindle itself. Often the spindle is mounted fixed at one end, and open at the other so that parts can be easily installed without removing the spindle.

A shaft is a rotating cylinder that may or may not have parts, such as wheels (turbine), impellers and oil slingers...etc. fixed to it. it is mounted most often at both ends in bearings so that the whole rotor assembly can rotate. This is a drive mechanism.

An axle is more specifically used for mounting wheels to any type of carriage, such as an automobile, it does not rotate but it may have power transmission shafts mounted inside the axle to drive the carriage; or the wheels are mounted on the ends of the axle with the use of spindles and wheel bearings, for axles that do not drive the vehicle.

What is the purpose of inter axle differential?

The inter axle differential (also called a power divider) is an integral shaft in the forward axle. That shaft is the input for the forward axle and also the rear axle with a differential separating the input from the output allowing for a difference in speed between the front and rear axle.

How do you remove the front inner shaft in a 1999 Dodge 1500 4wheel drive?

If you aretalking about the axle shaft between the wheel and differential on the front first loosen the lug nuts on either side that need to be removed. the jack the truck up and support with jack stands. Remove the tire and the brake calipers. Then using a 43 mm socket remove the hex nut on the spindle (axle shaft) . there are 3 bolts on the inside of the hub (9/16) which need to be removed. You might have to separate the bearing retainer ( the part that the 9/16 bolts hold) from the housing by prying between them. The axle shaft should pull out from the differential by hand force.

How do you remove the inner axle shaft on a F250 with a Dana 50 dif?

depends on which side you are removing. the drivers axle is somewhat easy, begin by jacking and supporting the vehicle, remove the wheel, caliper, and rotor Assembly's, are the rotor is removed you now have access to the spindle there are 6 nuts attaching the spindle to the knuckle, after removing these the spindle can sometimes be difficult to remove. use a LARGE rubber hammer or a block of wood and a heavy hammer to remove spindle ( rubber hammer or block of wood is used as to not damage bearing retainer threads and or shape of spindle. once all above is done the axle will slide out through the knuckle. to remove the pass side you need to remove the drivers side as well as the drive shaft. then also remove the outer shaft on the pass side as with drivers side (wheel, caliper, rotor, spindle( the outer shaft has a coupler about mid-shaft. remove one side rubber boot clamp, ( sometimes if care is used you can reuse them) if you need to further remove the inner shaft you then need to remove the carrier. once everything else is done you then unbolt carrier ( bolts go though suspension beam into the carrier once carrier is removed a simple c clip is all that holds axle in. hope this helps. How do you replace a1995 mercury villager CV axle?

First you need to loosen the CV shaft nut with the car on the ground in park. You need to raise the car, remove the wheel, unbolt the strut through bolts on the spindle, unbolt and separate the lower ball joint, unbolt and separate the tie rod end stud, remove the caliper from the spindle, and tap the CV shaft back so it's loose in the spindle. Move the spindle assembly back and free from the CV shaft. If it's the left CV shaft you can now pry it out of the transmission housing, it will just pop out. If it's the right CV shaft, you will need to remove the three bolts holding it to the carrier bearing bracket, then pull it out.
