When a person gets chickenpox, the rash will go away but the virus is still in the body and becomes dormant. If the virus becomes active again in the nerves, it is then called herpes zoster or shingles. This usually occurs when a person becomes older, but only in a small percentage of the population. Herpes simplex causes the cold sores or genital herpes.

herpes simplex is a more simplex virus in that the blisters will normally appear more on the surface and cluster, but generally be less severe than SHINGLES.

SHINGLES are deeper imbeded and you can't catch it like you can HERPES SIMPLEX.

These two are different viruses. Chickenpox is seen as a childhood disease while herpes can cause things like cold sores or herpes B, C. These never are cured. The chickenpox and herpes B have a vaccine.

A dermatome is a region of skin that is innervated by a particular nerve root. Herpes zoster virus is the virus that causes chicken pox and shingles.

When the herpes zoster virus causes a shingles outbreak in a person, the rash will be distributed along dermatome lines. This is because the virus lives in the nerve root, so affects all of the skin innervated by that specific nerve root.
