For many centuries there was none. A person was a child and then they were an adult. It wasn't until the 1940's that the term "teenager" was used and in the last several years it has become even more defined. Today there is clothing, perfumes, music, magazines, TV shows, games and other things just for "teens". The start ofteen hood has also lowered and gotten longer. Now, it seems that the start of becoming a teen goes as low as 11 or 12 and lasts until 19-20. The problem with this that at 19-20 people are adults. They are able to drive, sign a contract, get married, buy a house or car, and join the military. By putting off the age of adulthood there are more people not accepting the responsibility of being an adult. The lowering of the age also has consequences as well. More and more young men and women are engaging in behaviors that have been for older people. One of the things has happen is a higher rate of teen pregnancy to younger women. I think the primary difference in an adult or teen is the "age of consent". The age where someone can make the decisions and accept the responsibility for their actions. To sign contracts, get married, buy a car, vote, and join the military.

A Tween is a girl between the ages of 9 and 14. Tweens are too old to play with toys but too young to date boys. A Teen is someone between the ages of 13 and 19...the teen years. It looks like sometimes a tween can be a teen too!

The word "kid" is more colloquial or slang, it is used in casual speech. The word "child" is more precise, perhaps more formal.

Child generally refers to offspring, minors or people below the age of puberty. The word "kid" can either refer to a child or a young person in general. People may say "kid" to mean offspring, child or simply anyone young. For example, one may call both 10-year olds and 20-year olds "kids", but generally only the former will be considered a "child".

"Kid" is informally used to refer to a child or young person. "Child" is the more formal and standard term for a young human being. Both terms essentially refer to the same age group.
