The best answer I have found relating to the "difference" between toxoid and anti serum or anti toxin revolves more around the reason for application. While both may give the same result, the reason for application of each is quite different. Toxoids are given with a view to preventing or avoiding infection. Anti-toxins and Anti-serums are given in medical emergency when it might otherwise be too late to save a life. So, Toxoid to avoid or Anti-toxin in need of quick fixin! Harvey

Tetanus toxoid is what a tetanus vaccine contains. You're body will make anti-bodies to tetanus once given the tetanus vaccine, offering you protection for "up to" 10 years from the bacterial disease in case you cut or burn yourself. But if you didn't complete the series of 3 shots yet, see next paragraph. At 9-10 years from last shot, get a booster shot. Called Td/dT if you're an adult, or instead get Tdap/dTap if you're an adult and haven't had the Tdap/dTap yet. DTaP and DT are for children under 7. Tdap/dTap came out around 2005. It's adds a booster dose of acellular pertussis for adults, so you'll be protected from the nasty pertussis cough for "up to" 10 years. It boosts the DTaP series you might have had a child.

3000-5000 units of anti-tetanus serum is injected into and around the site of a wound for people that haven't completed a series of 3 tetanus vaccine shots, or, even if so, it's been more than 5 years since the last tetanus vaccine shot. Sometimes if anti-tetanus serum is not available, intravenous immune globulin will be given. The serum provides people who don't have enough anti-bodies to tetanus yet for the reasons listed above in this paragraph. The serum is made from what they collect out of human volunteers who have extra immunity to tetanus.

Tetanus toxoid is a deactivated form of tetanus toxin that is used in vaccines. Tetanus immunoglobulin is a drug that is used once a person has been exposed to tetanus, when a vaccine would not be helpful.

Why anti tetanus serum and tetanus toxoid given simultaneously to patient with dirty wounds?

You give the antitetanus serum because it contains passive antibodies that can immediately start attacking any antigens if present. While that is going on, the body reacts to the toxoids injected into it by producing its own antibodies, this process is slow thus we need the antitetanus serum for immediate protection.

Should you give anti tetanus serum and tetanus toxoid to a 3 year old baby?

Either can be given to a 3 year old. The anti tetanus serum should be given if there is reason to believe the child has not been immunized against tetanus before and has been exposed. If the child has been immunized, and there is reason to believe that they have been infected, the toxoid should be administered.

Is skin test necessary for antitetanus serum administration?

Yes.

What is the drug of choice if patient is anti tetanus serum positive?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin released by a bacterial organism. The serum contains antibodies to the toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The antibodies inactivate the toxin in the blood stream and prevent an individual from experiencing tetanus.

Is the tetanus vaccine made from horse serum?

No, the tetanus toxoid (routine vaccine) is not. However, the tetanus antitoxin for horses (which imparts antibodies directly to the horse that were produced by another horse) does. That is why the antitoxin comes with increased risk of adverse reaction and also why it doesn't provide prolonged protection. The toxoid causes the horse's body to develop it's own antibodies against the toxin that causes Tetanus while the antitoxin is pre-made antibodies.

What is the main action of anti tetanus serum?

It binds to the tetanus toxin in your blood, blocking the toxin's action on the body's systems. If you have completed your tetanus vaccine schedule, anti-tetanus serum is not required as your blood already contains the apparatus to produce this itself.

Anti tetanus serum is also known as?

Anti-tetanus serum is also known as tetanus immune globlulin. In the US, commercial brands available include HyperTet and BayTet. Blood from people who have been immunized with tetanus vaccine is processed to get the tetanus antibodies, which is injected to prevent tetanus in an un-immunized person.
