Democratic and Republican PartiesBoth are political parties in the United States. The Democratic Party is thought to be more liberal, quicker to expand social programs, more likely to put restrictions on business, more favorable toward labor unions and more eager to expand the federal government. Republicans are thought to be more conservative, less likely to start social programs, and more favorable towards business and military expenditures.

In reality, the party which is out of power tries to find fault with the administration that is in power and make promises that will appeal to the independents and to anyone who is dissatisfied with his position in life.
On the average, the Democrats are considered more liberal and the Republicans are considered more conservative. However, there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. The Republicans tend to favor less government and the Democrats tend to favor more government, when dealing with domestic problems and individual and states' rights. Republicans tend to favor economic laws that regulate as little as possible. Democrats favor legislation that regulates industry for the protection of the consumer. Democrats tend to favor some sort of government aid for those individuals who need assistance. Republicans tend to favor ways to help the states and local, private charities help individuals in need.

Despite what their respective members might say, there is very little substantive difference these days. Both strongly believe in the power of a government entity or agency to uphold or enforce their ideas or beliefs. Both agree on the need for taxation at various levels to allocate money to projects and/or functions they deem important. Both agree that the state has absolute power over your body. The difference between the Democrats and Republicans is like the difference between someone who mugs you with a revolver versus someone who mugs you with an automatic. They both use the threat of (deadly) force to compel you to hand over your earnings to further their own way of life. They do not really believe in individual freedoms and liberty, despite what they might say. *NOTE to the author there is a big difference between the two parties. Democrats are more liberal and Republicans are a lot more conservative. Note to the Note The question was related to the PARTIES , not the philosophy of individual members. Democrats tend to be liberal in some areas, conservative in others. Republicans tend to be conservative in some areas, liberal in others. But both PARTIES have the same aim-increase their power in the government.

The Republican Party is largely right-wing conservative, tending to favor policies that are pro-business, pro-military, anti-Immigration, anti-abortion, pro "traditional values"/socially conservative, and less concerned about the environment. They espouse a philosophy that tends to view the government as a necessary evil that should be as small as possible and do as little as possible. Since the 1980's, the Party has strongly, and successfully, pushed for "supply-side economics" (called "trickle-down economics" by opponents)- the general idea being that if you lower taxes for wealthy people and corporations, they will use the extra money to create new jobs for poor people. The list isn't conclusive, and there can be differing opinions on certain topics.

The Democratic Party* is an "all under one tent" sort of party. It is generally centrist/slightly left-leaning, but there are all sorts of sub-groups included within the party, even conservatives (often called "Blue Dogs", or "Dixiecrats" if they are from the South). The Party tends to favor policies that are slightly less pro-business, pro-immigration reform, pro-choice, socially liberal, more environmentally oriented, and less military-centric. They tend to believe that the government can accomplish good things to help the people, and should do so when it can. Economically, the Party tends to favor a slightly mixed economy, where the government does intervene occasionally to keep corporations and wealthy people from running amok and keep a "level playing field". As above, this list isn't conclusive and, owing to the "all under one tent" theme, it is common for there to be differing opinions on certain topics.

Despite what the internet, FoxNews, and other right-wing pundits say, neither the Democratic Party nor Barack Obama is "socialist", or "far left/leftist" in any way- actual socialists and leftists laugh (or get really angry) when confronted with this. There may be some actual socialists and hardcore leftists within the party, but Obama is not one of them. An example of an actual socialist would be Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont (who is not a member of the Democratic Party).

Additionally, it should be noted that a party claiming to believe in one thing (or, alternatively, claiming what the other party believes) may not necessarily match up with what they do once the party is in charge. Republicans like to talk a lot about how they favor "small government" and "fiscal conservatism", yet the government grew massively under Presidents Reagan and Bush II; budget deficits and the federal debt also exploded under each, and actually shrank slightly under Clinton (a centrist Democrat).

By the same token, President Obama claimed that he would bring change to the federal government, yet has done little to reverse or change some of the major policies of his predecessors (although, to be fair, he has had to contend with a very stubborn Congress that also has done little since 2009). In addition, most of Obama's signature act as president, the Affordable Healthcare Act (often derisively called "Obamacare") was actually largely based on Republican plans for health care reform that were made in the early 1990's.

* - note that there is no "Democrat Party" in the United States. This is a slur that is usually used by Republicans/conservatives who think that they're being clever or think that it annoys Democrats. Neither is true; it simply marks that person as being a Republican/conservative, or someone who simply doesn't know any better.

The democratic party believes that everyone should have the same, and that those who work hard to get ahead should devide their gains with others who do nothing to get ahead. They believe in taxing the well off to give to give to others. They like to keep poor people. and without any ambition to strife for more.

The republican party believes that you should work to get ahead, and should not expect the government to support you. They believe that America is the greatest country in the world and should remain that way, and that all Americans should be a well educated, God loving and proud people.
