Fantasy is a story set in a make-believe world, or a setting with extraordinary conditions. Possibly it contains a story where the cows talk, or the mice are great cooks. Fantasy is most often associated with dungeons and dragons and swords and bows.

The differentiate between traditional fantasy and modern fantasy one has to ask, "Is the author identifiable?"

Traditional fantasy, as far as I know, is a term used for legends, myths, folktales, fables and ballads.

Modern fantasy sometimes includes influences from the afore-mentioned, but has an identifiable author. Today modern fantasy is split into hundreds of subgenres.

Fairy Tales typically involve magical elements, mythical creatures, and themes of good versus evil, while modern tales often focus on contemporary settings, realistic characters, and moral dilemmas relevant to today's society. Fairy tales are usually passed down through generations and have a more traditional storytelling style, whereas modern tales may incorporate technology and social issues.

That's an interesting question, because in some stories the only difference is whether you call something "magic" or "science." It ends up being the same story either way. Ideally, though, and in harder Science Fiction, the science is based on things that have been theorized and not disproven.

Typically, fantasy is the realm of magic, dragons, wizards, vampires, werewolves, unicorns, orcs, hobbits, fauns, etc.

Science Fiction is the realm of Dystopia, post-apocalyptic drama, time travel, faster-than-light travel, utopia, alternate dimensions, aliens, robots, etc.

Of course, these sometimes cross over. For instance, Anne McCaffery wrote a Science Fiction story about "dragons" in her Pern stories in a way, since the dragons were a species native to a different planet that had been colonized from earth, and just called dragons because that was the closest thing they could think of that they resembled. There is a lot of technology in those stories, but also fantasy elements. Another example would be Piers Anthony's Phaze series, which deals with both fantastic and technological worlds, and being able to travel between them, but magic only works in one of them, and science has primacy in the other.

_____

Good science fiction says "How would society be different if we had flying cars?" Then the story explores the differences with a logical unfolding of the story. Its goal is to explore the logical consequences of a technological advance.

Good fantasy creates an escape from the logical world; a place where you don't have to worry about taxes or car repair.

Science Fiction should adhere to science so the story could possibly happen. Fantasy adheres to no rules at all. Both are fiction, dealing with people and events which aren't real and are in other words imaginary.

for me fiction doesn't exist and fantasy is only an imagination

And for me, fiction is placed in the future or has something that isn't human-like and fantasy has to do with the past and a concept that's unknown. I personally like Fantasy over fiction but that's just my opinion.
