Under many religious theologies, having sex outside of marriage is considered sinful. Outside of a religious context there is really not much of a difference, however if a child is conceived a married couple would enjoy different legal benefits than an unmarried couple.

And if you were to break up with a man/woman after having sex it would have been wasted on them and you can never un-do it.
