It depends on the Ruby and the Amethyst! You could have a perfectly colored and cut Amethyst worth 100 times the price of a poorly colored, included, poorly cut Ruby and vice versa. However, the finest colored Ruby will always be worth more than the finest colored Amethyst as it is simply rarer.

Well it's kinda easy 'cos there are hardly any rocks that are purple other than amethyst. Firstly amethyst is violet, secondly it's usually transparent and sometimes has white parts, and lastly amethyst occurs in a hexagonal prism naturally. Oh, and you wouldn't find a polished amethyst crystal on the ground, trust me.
