Do you mean the number and letters on pencils? If so, H means hard and the higher the number, the harder - 9H is as hard as they come and will produce a very thin line with ease. HB means hard black and it sits in the middle of the scale. B means black and the higher the number the softer - 9H is very soft and used for sketching only. A common grade for everyday use is HB. There is also an American system where a 2 is an everyday grade similar to HB All pencil lead is a mix of graphite and clay.
