Poems are typically short lyrical pieces that use rhythm and language to evoke emotion. Plays are scripts written for performance on stage, often with dialogue and stage directions. Short stories are fictional narratives that are shorter in length compared to novels, focusing on a particular event or character. Novels are longer works of fiction that explore complex plots and character development in greater depth.

The primary difference is in the number of words. There is no rigidly set standard but a short story is said to have between 500 and 15,000 words while the novel is said to have between 80,000 and 150,000 words. (In between are the Novelette and Novella) This primary criteria has secondary effects # The short story will have less subplots # The short story will have less character development # The short story will have more easily defined components Another general difference is that, aside from just using the number of words, the short story is one that can be read by the average reader in one sitting rather than over several as is usually needed for a novel.

A short story is short and direct to each point, but a novel usually contain extended information about many points in the story.

The short story is simple, but a novel is much more complicated.

A novel is mostly about adventures....
