Confucianism is a philosophy originated by the Chinese Philosopher, Confucius, which teaches that Logic and reason can solve all human problems, and rejects excessive emotion and superstition. Confucianism also teaches that following the traditions of early Chinese culture is the best way to organize society. Traditional Ritual, Music and Poetry are also seen as important tools in maintaining societal harmony. The main source of confucian teaching are the collected sayings of confucius.

Daoism on the other hand was started by Lao Tzu, and is mainly concerned with living a balanced life based on following Nature. Lau Tzu saw the natural world as a sort of teacher which could impart wisdom to mankind if we only observed it and modeled our lives on what we see in nature. Extremes are to be avoided, passivity is encouraged over force, going with the flow of things and avoiding conflict is the goal. A good Daoist observation would be that a small stream will eventually wear down a solid rock or mountain over millions of years, therefore - being slow, gentle and flexible like water, is more effective than being unbendable and hard as a rock.

Taoism and Confucianism, despite their many similarities, can be viewed as practically opposite in some important respects.

Confucianism is primarily concerned with social order, which is imposed on the people by an elaborate set of rituals, ceremonies, customs, and laws. In the view of the

Confucian, the best good is conformity to the order.

By contrast, Taoism is a faith that expects the greatest good to arise without imposed order. Individualism is not only permitted, it is encouraged.

From the Confucian point of view, the complete development of a Taoist society would produce anarchy. From the Taoist point of view, Confucianism is simply an inferior way of producing order which ultimately will not work because it seeks to prevent development and change, and thereby to control things that are beyond control.

The greatest emperor in a Confucian country would be considered to be one who maintained the laws and ceremonies, who allowed people access to the things they needed to live, and who guided them by wise application of the laws requiring them to conform to the social standard.

The greatest emperor in a Taoist country would be considered to be one who allowed his people to live their lives as they choose, applying only whatever energy was absolutely necessary. In fact the Tao Te Ching explicitly states that the best emperor would be unknown to his people.

Both Taoism and Confucianism arise from Chinese folk religion. Both rely on the principles of the Yin and Yang. Adherents of both use the I Ching as an oracle and guide. Neither has a clear statement of divinity, the spirit, or the afterlife. The ethics of both are similar, except as regard to control and ritual.
