Best Answer

Cavalry/Infantry/Dragoon

Cavalry rides to the battle and fights mounted. Traditionally on horseback, but motorized with humvees and helicopters nowdays.

Infantry walks to the battle and fights on foot. But today, they may get to the front by truck, airplane, etc.

Dragoons rode to the front but fought on foot. So today's infantry are really dragoons, but that term has disappeared.

Calvary is the name of a place, the hill where Christ was said to be crucified.

Cavalry is a term used to describe horse-mounted soldiers, although modern cavalry regiments are mechanized. It comes from the Italian word 'cavallo' meaning horse. Also from cavallo comes the word cavaliere, meaning knight (or mounted soldier), which in french is 'chevalier', from which comes the word 'chivalry' in English.

In the US Civil War, the field military was generally speaking divided by the foot soldiers of the infantry. This was the largest military unit on both sides of the war. Mounted on horses was the calvary, on both sides. These units were used for raids on enemy armies and territory. They were also normally a part of major battles. This was the case in most European nations as well.
