It is not exactly a disease. It is disorder with the Cardiac Sphincter (nothing to do with the heart), where it does not close tight enough to prevent stomach acid from coming back into the esophagus from the stomach. This causes a burning sensation as the esophagus does not have a lining that is resistant to the acid in the stomach.
It can be treated by eating more often but in much smaller quantities each time. Also, some people find it helpfull to sleep with the legs slightly lower than the upper body so as to reduce any food or acid moving upwards. The use of acid reducing meds such as Rinatadine, has been known to help with the burning.
