I think the dragon is a gatekeeper. He is viewed as being our worst nightmare who has seemingly unlimited power. He is the embodiment of fear, personal death with accompanying darkness, hopelessness and isolation. Essentially the dragon represents a lack of Spirit or God in one's life. The dragon exists to enable us to synthesize the personal (self) and the the impersonal (infinite Self) and so restore ourselves to completeness.
To synthesize the two, the key may be to recognize the field of the dragon is the Unmanifest -- a realm upon which all things are grounded. The realm of God (as we know Him) is that of the Manifest. These two fields exist side by side and are one. They both have infinite power and strength.
