Drinking, in private, may start at an early age in Italy. There's no law that pinpoints a beginning age for alcohol consumption, in private. But there is a law that sets some public guidelines. According to article 689 of the 'Codice Penale' ['Penal Code'], a 16 year old may buy alcohol as long as its strength is less than 10%. Anything stronger requires a minimum age of 18. Despite this, it's possible for 14-15 year olds to drink in public as long as the beverages are being handed out by their parents or legal guardians.
