Depends on how heavy the rust is. Light surface rust comes right off with 0000 steel wool and a good gun oil. Heavier rust may need the attention of a gunsmith.

Good answer above. Remember that bluing is a FORM of rust, so rust removing chemicals, such as Naval Jelly, will also strip bluing in a blink.

∙ 14y agoI would soak it in penetrating oil for a day or two, then take a brass or fine steel wire 3 or 4 inch wire wheel available at most hardware stores, mount it on a drill or small bench grinder and watch the rust fly off. Make sure you wear a face shield!! There is a different less aggresive procedure for fine or light rust. Contact me for that info.
