Any pickaxe can used, as with mining any other ore; the higher level the pickaxe, the faster you can mine the ore.

If you plan on smithing the ore afterwars into bars, consider obtaining Goldsmithing Gauntlets from the Family Crest quest, because they give 2x experience when smelting gold bars.
