Erosion occur via natural or man- made weathering. For example, Rocks (ignious) weather to form sand. Weathering is as it sounds: the process that causes erosion by Rain (acid rain included), Flooding, hail, etc.
the rain fills the cracks in a rock (for example) then freezes with the temprature. Then when the temprature gets above freezing the particles in the rock get excited and during that motion the H2O particles from the melted ice merge together which causes the physical properties of the rock to separate to make room. This is the cause of a crack, once there are enough cracks then the rock will break down. The process continues until the rock particles are granulated like sand.
I hope this helps, if you want it "dummed down" then basically, it rains, the water gets into the rock, the rock starts to crack, the rock breaks, the rock continues to do so until it is sand (or otherwise depending upon the rock)
Erosion is the process of carrying bits of rocks and other materials. There are two types of erosion called water erosion and wind erosion.
water erosion, wind erosion, and glacial erosion.
Wind erosion, liquid erosion, chemical/corrosive erosion, heat erosion, can't think of any more...
wind erosion rain erosion
This is called erosion.
There is water erosion, wind erosion, ice erosion, basically anything that breaks down earth materials is erosion.

Silting. Erosion.
A valley itself cannot cause erosion, but can be hugely affected by erosion. Usually Valley erosion is caused by glaciers, a common agent of erosion.
