Europeans (Whites)
Most Americans are part of the European-American group. The European-Americans supplanted the Native Americans as the largest group in the area.
European-Americans are a diverse group, including:
English are the third largest group (about 9% of the population), and was the largest group back in the 1700s and 1800s. They are seen as one of the founding peoples of the US, and contributed much of its culture, language and history. They were the original dominant people of the United States, although they have now merged into the new "White" or European-American majority. They are prominent throughout the US, but are the largest group only in parts of New England, Utah, and perhaps parts of the South that have people who identify solely as "American" as the largest group (that is, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas, as well as smaller parts of Texas, Missouri, and parts of the "Black" states),
Irish are the second largest group, and migrated largely during the 1800s. Surprisingly have a very strong identity in the United States, unlike the Irish in Australia that are almost entirely assimilated. They are very prominent in parts of New England.
Germans are the largest group, at 17% of the population. They mostly emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. They are found throughout the US, although they are especially prominent in Florida, the Midwest, parts of Texas and California and the Northwestern United States.
Other Northern European groups in the US include the Scots (1.7%, or more if you include the Scots-Irish), Scots-Irish (ethnic Scots that migrated from Ireland), Dutch (2.5%), Norwegians (1.6%) and Swedes (1.6%). There are also many Danes, Welsh, Finns, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, but they form less than 1% of the population each.
The Italians are the largest southern European people present in the US. They are the largest ethnic group in parts of New England and are also present strongly in the Western United States. 6% of the US is Italian. Most Italians arrived to the United States in the early 1900s.
French have been present in the United States since its early history. Many French became American citizens when the United States bought the Louisiana province from the French Empire (this included large swathes of the central areas of the United States, not just the state of Louisiana). Some French "subgroups" are French-Canadians (people of French ancestry who migrated to the US from Canada), Acadians (French-Canadians from a certain part of Canada) and Cajuns (a culturally mixed group in the South). 3-4% of the US is French.
Other Southern European peoples include the Greeks, Portuguese and Spanish. There may be more Spanish-Americans than shown in the census, due to the large number of "White Hispanics" that may just show their ancestry as "Hispanic" or "Mexican" or some other national/cultural category rather than Spanish. 0.6% of the US identified as Spanish-American, but many of the 8% of White Hispancs may be Spanish as well.
Among American Slavs, the largest groups are the Poles, and then the Russians.
3% of the population is Polish. They migrated mostly during the early 1900s. 1% of Americans identify as Russians, and the Russian-Americans mostly came to the US at around the same time as the Poles.
Other Slavic groups include Serbs, Croats, Ukrainians, Czechs, Slovaks, Belarusians and Slovenes. There are also some non-Slavic Albanians and Hungarians among the Eastern Europeans in the United States.
An additional 7% identify as "American" only. They are likely of English, Scots, French and Welsh ancestry, perhaps even Irish.
6% of the population are "White Hispanics", a large number of which are of Spanish ancestry (including Galicians, Basques, Castilians, etc.) , but there are also many Italians, Germans, Poles, etc. among the Hispanic population.
European-Americans are a clear majority in the United States. Non-Hispanic Whites will no longer be the majority by at least 2042 (they'll still be the largest group, though, just not over 50% of the population), but considering the fact that most Hispanics are of European descent anyway, the European majority does not have much to worry about.
Racial slurs used for European Americans include "H*nkey", "Cr*cker", and, in Hawaii, "Howlee". Howlee is a Hawaiian word, while the origins of the other two words are more dubious.
Africans (Blacks)
Africans, if grouped together, were the second largest ethnic group in the United States in the 1700s (after the English, of course). African Americans form around 13% of the population.
There are two different definitions of African-American:
The former is a more inclusive definition, while the latter is more exclusive. In the first definition, people like Barack Obama (descended from Joluo people from Kenya, as well as European-Americans), Akon (descended from Wolof people from Senegal) and Colin Powell (of Afro-Jamaican descent) would be included (ignoring the archaic "one-drop rule" for the moment), while in the latter they would not be.
For the rest of this section, the first, more inclusive definition, will be referred to as "Black American" or "African American". The second, more exclusive definition will be referred to as "Afro-American". This is to avoid confusion, even though all of the terms are technically synonymous.
Afro-Americans have lived in the United States for centuries. They originally came in the 1600s, making them one of the United States' oldest ethnic groups, along with the English and Native Americans. They arrived as slaves to the European majority. Slavery was abolished in 1865, although there were also many free Blacks in the United States beforehand, called "freemen".
Historically, Afro-Americans have used many different names. One of the earliest names was "N*gro" which the word "N*gger" evolved from (the latter is largely considered a racial slur, although many Afro-Americans today use it to refer to themselves and fellow Afro-Americans). Coloured came later. These words have all fell out of fashion - in modern times it is seen to be politically correct to refer to them as African American, Black or Black American (African without American used as a suffix is also used, but is far less common). "N*gger" is also used as a slur for Blacks as a whole.
Afro-Americans are the largest ethnic group in Louisiana, Missisipi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. They have a large presence throughout the United States. The counties in the South with an Afro-American plurality or majority are collectively known as the "Black Belt".
Historically, some Afro-Americans moved to their "homeland", Africa, founding the nation of Liberia and creating the Americo-Liberian ethnic group of Liberia, as well as the Krio ethnic group of Sierra Leone. Some even migrated to Canada and the UK.
Other Afro-diasporic peoples (those descended from West African slaves outside of Africa) are also found in the United States.
Jamaican-Americans form about 0.3% of the US population (910, 000), however, this could also include White, Asian, and Amerindian Jamaicans. There are no statistics on the number of Afro-Jamaicans in the United States, but it is likely that they are the largest Black American group after Afro-Americans.
Afro-Haitians are another large Afro-diasporic people in the United States. Numbers for Afro-Haitian Americans suffer from the same issues that Afro-Jamaicans do.
Afro-Hispanics in the US, on the other hand, are documented by the US Census to be at over 600, 000.
More recent immigrants from Africa (that is, those that are not descended from the slave trade) include Kenyans, Ethiopians and Nigerians. Africans are one of the smallest migrant groups to the US (likely even smaller than modern European migrants), most come from Latin America and Asia.
Amerindians (Native Americans)
Native Americans are the "original people" of the area that is now known as the United States. They were the largest (indeed, only) group before British colonization (as well as French, Spanish and Russian colonization in areas that the US later expanded into). They are known as Indians, American Indians or Amerindians because when Christopher Colombus sailed to the Americas, he named the people he found "Indians" because he thought that he had reached India. This name stuck as an umbrella term for all native ethnic groups of the Americas, although it is gradually being replaced by "Native American".
They have also been known as R*dskins, Reds or Red men (keeping in line with the Black/White/Yellow/Brown/Red racial view of the world popular in colonial times - the influence of this view is still felt today), but these terms are now largely seen as racist.
The main Native American stereotype is that of the Plains Indian. There are however, many different cultural groups within the Native Americans, including Athabaskans, Eskimos, California tribes, Plateau tribes, Great Basin tribes, Pacific Northwest tribes, Southwestern tribes, Southeastern tribes and Northeastern Woodlands tribes.
Native Americans in modern times are stereotyped as owning and working at casinos.
Pacific Islanders
The largest group of Pacific Islanders are the Polynesians. Most Polynesians are Hawaiians (also known as Native Hawaiians). Hawaiians are mostly found in the state of Hawaii.
Hawaii was annexed from the Kingdom of Hawaii by American businessmen. After this, huge numbers European Americans and Asian Americans migrated to Hawaii (as well as people directly from Asia and Europe). Today, Hawaiians are the second largest ethnic group in Hawaii, after Japanese-Americans.
They are the smallest of the Census' racial categories.
Asians
"Asian" is an umbrella term for East Asians, South Asians, Southeast Asians and Middle Easterners. North Asians and Central Asians don't really have a presense in the US.
Chinese are the largest East Asian American group, self-identified Chinese are 1.2% of the population. Japanese Americans are 0.4% of the population, and Korean Americans are 0.5% of the population.
East Asians (as well as South Asians) are often stereotyped as being hyper-intelligent over-achievers. "Gook", "Chinaman", "Chink" and "Jap" are various racial slurs used for East Asians. They have been known as Orientals and Yellows, historically.
Among Southeast Asians, there are many Thais, Khmer, Lao and even Hmong.
Middle Eastern (and North African) peoples in the United States include Arabs, Turks and Assyrians.
Arab Americans are about 0.5% of the population. The largest group of Arab Americans are the Lebanese Arabs. Egyptian Arabs and Syrian Arabs are also quite big.
Assyrians are an ethnic group from Iraq that has stayed as a non-Arab minority due to its Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Nestorian Christian religion. Many Syriacs refer to themselves as Chaldeans or Arameans rather than Assyrians due to the churches they are part of.
Middle Eastern Americans are often stereotyped as terrorists and Islamic extremists (even though many, especially Assyrians, are Christians) due to 9/11 and the War on Terror.
South Asian groups include Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans and Nepalis. These are, however, national diasporic groups rather than ethnic diasporic groups. True South Asian ethnic groups are Punjabis, Bengalis, Tamils, Telugus, Marathis, etc.
Hispanics and Latinos
Hispanics in the United States are Americans with Hispanic American ancestry, and Latinos are from Latin America. Hispanic America are the areas of the Americas that Spanish is spoken, and Latin American is where the Romance languages are spoken.
Most Hispanics and Latinos are Europeans (Whites), Mestizos (mixed White/Amerindian), Mulattos (mixed White/Black), Black or Amerindian. They are however seen as a single race or ethnic group by a majority of the American population. Many Hispanics are of Spanish ancestry.
Jews
Jews can be seen as either a religious or ethnic group. Most American Jews are Ashkenazi Jews, but there are some Saphardis and even Bene Roma (Italians), Romaniotes (Greeks) and Mizrahis (Middle Easterners, includes many different Jewish communities) too.
Ashkenazi Jews migrated to the United States along with their fellow nationals from Germany, Poland, Russia, Hungary, and other Central and Eastern European states.
Saphardi Jews migrated from North Africa, Spain, Portugal and France.
Jews are stereotyped as rich - often lawyers, bankers or higher-ups in corporations. Many Jews are now becoming assimilated into the non-Jewish White majority.
alot!
English
The US has been called a melting pot of ethnicity and countries of origin. There is much diversity and many ethnic categories among the population.
He is Nigerian but he was born in the US.
bueno aires
Certainly not.
The answer to this depends both on the framing of the question (e.g. most common in which respect to which grouping of people) and the locale in operation (e.g. most common in which country). If the question is asking what ethnicity was most common in the general population of the United States, the answer was, and would be German-Americans. German-Americans count as 17.1% of the US population, making them the single largest ethnic origin for Americans.
Its ethnicity is originally Polish, which has become wides[read within the US due to mass migration following the war
I would say that the Caucasian population would in fact have a higher standard of living compared to the African American population or even the Latino population.
As of 2014, the population of Kazakhstan is 17,948,816. Current estimates put the Kazakhs of Russian ethnicity or origan as 23.7% of the population.
An ethnic trend is simply a trend in regards to ethnicity. For example, there could be a trend that Hispanics are growing as a percentage of the US population. So it would be an ethnic trend that the number of Hispanics is increasing in the United States.

The UK has a predominantly Caucasian population, but also is home to immigrants from every part of the world.
