In the United States, the definitions of these terms are in flux. According to social liberal/progressive individuals, a family is a unit composed of one or more adults (gender neutral), with or without children, that lives in a defined household and shares responsibility for the well-being of those individuals within the household.

According to social conservatives, a family is a unit composed of a male father, female mother along with any children of the union that is living within a defined household and sharing responsibility for the well-being of those individuals within the household.

The disagreement is over the inclusion of gay and lesbian couples as a family. In practical terms, two men or two women living as a couple function similar to a man and a woman living as a couple. However, there are some religious objections to this, mostly based upon the Old Testament of The Bible.

In most nuclear families, the husband and wife are working and the kid, if any either goes to the daycare or is left with a baby sitter. Double income ensure good standard of living. However, due to their busy lifestyle, the parent is seldom able to spend quality time with their kids. Also they try to compensate their absence with gifts and gadgets. All in all they aren't actively involved in the development of their kid, but they are focused in framing a good career for themselves. They are able to reap rich benefits too. Moreover, they succeed in making their kid independent and one who has the capability of taking his decisions and standing by them.
