I am assuming it is From the Camera itself, since they use USB2.0, and it can cache.
Otherwise, put the card in a card reader.
The fastest way to transfer files from your computer to an external hard drive would be with a firewire cable. They are much faster than USB cables.
Your camera and computer both need to have a method of transfer like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. USB can also be used if you can be limited by a cable connection. Some Smartphones allow you to automatically send your images to the cloud. That way, you can store all your images to Microsoft's OneDrive, or Dropbox, or Apple's equivalent. You then have access to thousands of images without exhausting your Smartphone's memory.

One way to download images from a Sanyo Katana to an Ipad is to use the Bluetooth feature on each device and transfer the images. Another would be to upload the pictures onto a computer and transfer the image files via USB.
It was a breakthrough because you could show real pictures instead of describing something. Before the invention of the camera the only way to capture real images was through painting. The camera allowed images to be caught without a framed image. A painted image and a photograph are a construct of an image, depending on the creator, but a camera, think of all that could capture: in real time. A camera is there!
The retina is very similar to the film in a camera. Images come through the eye's lens and are focused on the retina. The retina then converts these images to electric signals and sends them by way of the optic nerve to the back lobe of the brain.

In my opinion putting the memory card directly in the computer works the best.
